Further Information: Terminology and Navigation Guidance
A reference page explaining the terminology used across the Caldersholl system and offering additional guidance on how to navigate the organised information environment effectively.
About This Page
This page provides a reference glossary for the terminology used within the Caldersholl system, alongside additional guidance on approaching the organised information environment. It is intended to complement the System Overview and Tools and Features pages rather than repeat their content.
Terminology Reference
Category
A category is the primary organisational unit within the Caldersholl system. Each category groups together a set of items that share a defined characteristic or subject area. Categories are the main navigation structure that users encounter when working within the system. Moving between categories is the primary way of navigating across different areas of the organised information.
Classification
Classification refers to the process by which items are assigned to categories and, where applicable, sub-categories. The classification structure is determined during the system's configuration. Items may be re-classified if the classification criteria change, but this is not an automatic process and does not occur in response to user activity.
Item
An item is a discrete unit of information held within the system. Items are the individual records, documents, or entries that appear within categories. Each item has a defined set of attributes — such as a title, a date, a type indicator, and any contextual notes — that are displayed when the item is viewed within the interface.
Sub-category
Where a category contains a large or varied set of items, the system may organise those items into sub-categories. A sub-category is a further division within a category, grouping items by a more specific characteristic. Sub-categories are visible within the category view and can be navigated independently.
Cross-reference
A cross-reference is a navigational link between an item in one category and a related item in another. Cross-references are indicated within the interface and provide a direct route to related material without requiring the user to navigate from the top level. They do not duplicate the related item; they link to it.
Contextual note
A contextual note is a supplementary explanation attached to an item within the system. Contextual notes are added during configuration and provide clarifying information about how an item has been classified, what its attributes represent, or what the item's scope is. They are descriptive, not evaluative.
Filter
A filter is a control within the interface that allows users to narrow the set of items visible within a category. Filters operate on the structured attributes of items — such as type, date range, or other defined characteristics — and can be applied and removed without navigating away from the current category view.
Relevance highlighting
Relevance highlighting is a feature of the interface that visually distinguishes items the system identifies as likely to be of particular interest within the current review context. The highlighting is based on navigational context within the current session and does not persist between sessions. It does not affect the availability of other items in the category.
Enquiry
An enquiry is a message submitted to the Caldersholl support team through the contact channel on the Send an Enquiry page. An enquiry may be a general question about the system, a request for access, a technical support request, or a question about the content available within a particular category. Submitting an enquiry does not guarantee a response or access to the system.
Navigation Guidance
Starting a Review
If you are working within the Caldersholl interface for the first time, the most effective starting point is usually the top-level category view. From there, you can identify the categories most relevant to your area of interest and navigate into them. The breadcrumb trail within the interface will maintain a record of where you are within the system as you move through it.
Working Through a Category
Within a category, items are presented in a consistent format. If a category is large, it may be worth applying one or more filters to narrow the view before beginning to review individual items. This reduces the number of items visible at once and makes it easier to focus on a specific subset.
If you reach the end of a category and have not found what you were looking for, the cross-references within individual items may point to related material in other categories. The suggested next steps at the end of each category section may also indicate where to look.
When to Submit an Enquiry
If you cannot locate information you expected to find, if the classification of an item is unclear, or if you need context that the system's interface does not provide, submitting an enquiry to the support team is the appropriate next step. The team can advise on what is available within the system, how particular items have been classified, and whether a specific type of information is included in the system's current configuration.
